Elsa Immodest!

I don't know if you have ever hung out in conservative christian circles, but when Frozen first came out(which I know was a while ago) then you have probably heard someone say "Elsa's dress was so immodest!" I know I have heard it a few times. Is her dress really immodest though? I think it is important to point out that Elsa's dress is actually quite tame compared to some previous Disney princesses.

Images copyright of Disney

I actually found Elsa to be really modest. compared to the other directions Disney has gone in the past. Her dress is in fact no different than what Cinderella, Belle, and Aurora wore.

images copyright of Disney
Now lets break it down....
She has long sleeves instead of now sleeves.
She is wearing a long skirted dress instead of a short skirt.
She has a slit in the skirt that only goes to her knee.
You can's see any cleavage instead of a lot of cleavage.
As far as I can tell this fits most modest dress cloths criteria. Maybe they are bothered by the fact that you can tell she is a women in the dress instead of dress that hides her curves. Her dress does not really break any modesty rules, instead I would say it follows them quite well.

I think though that this dress has some significance to her character in the movies.

images copyright of Disney

Elsa's outfit from the beginning of the movie is her completely covered. She literally does not show any skin outside of her face. She has her neck covered, her hands. She is not in contact with the outside world. When she changes her outfit she shows her neck and has a slit in her dress. Her sleeves, while still long are transparent. She is allowing her self contact with the world around her. She is breaking out of the walls she built around herself to protect herself.

Overall this post is to say that Elsa's dress is not immodest and that her dress has significant meaning to her character. My other question is why we are so concerned about what a character wears there are much bigger issues with Disney's choice of how they present their characters. Such as the inaccurate proportions or their female characters. Elsa's waist is much smaller than what is natural proportionally. I think there are bigger issues than what a character is wearing.

What are your thoughts on the use of clothing in Frozen?

11. I am reading currently about 7 books right now. That is not even counting the nonfiction books I read for school.

Questions from Paula

1.What are your most treasured books?
Hmm...That is a difficult question. I have so many that I love that is impossible to say. looking at our shelves though I would have to say Jane Eyre, Till We Have Faces, North & South, Chronicles of Narnia, Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, and probably at least a dozen more. There are so many that I love and enjoy.
2.What books have you read more than once?
Can I include currently rereading?
-Jane Eyre
-Pride and Prejudice
-North and South
-Percy Jackson and the Olympian series
-The Hunger Games series
-Angel on the Square
-The Chronicles of Narnia
-probably more

3.What’s your favorite bookstore?
um... I really prefer Barnes and Noble, although I do really like the little book stores that you come across here and there.

4.Do you buy books online?
I personally have never purchased a book online, but I would say that I mother has bought books for the whole family online. So kind of.

5.Do you stop reading books half way through?
I have. Most of the time though I finish them because I hate to leave things unfinished.

6.What’s the last movie you watched?
uh....I mostly watch TV series so I am having trouble remembering the last movie I watched. I think the last thing I watched Despicable Me with my family.

7.What’s your favorite genre?
Of books or TV? If is is books then I would have to say historical fiction, novel, and fantasy.
For TV, that is such a wide variety of things it would be a really long list. though Sci-Fi, and Period Dram appear to make up most of what I watch. Also most anything done by the BBC.

8.In which movie/book would you like to live in?
I have pretty much thought about living in every book or movie I have ever seen, some more so than others, so this question is a really really difficult one. I really can't think of one I would like to live in more.

9.Which character do you think has a great style?
Interesting. I have not really thought about that, and I have not really paid much attention to a characters style so I will just say what characters like best.
If I go with strictly book characters, I am faced with a difficult problem, I am going to say Elinor Dashwood, she is sensible, kind, and knows how to behave herself. If I go with strictly movie characters....hmm. Daniel Jackson, he is smart, loves ancient history, and is a pretty nice guy.

10.Do you go to the movies by yourself?
No, I have either gone with my family, or with the youth group at my church.

11.In the movies: popcorn or no popcorn?
I don't really like popcorn. It can be messy, and sticks in my teeth. Also it can be expensive at the move theater.

Questions for those I tag

9. What is something that fascinates you most?
10. What kind(s) of music do you prefer to listen to?

The other side of me

So when I started this blog I wanted to post about things that I like, enjoy, and just want to talk about. It was a place for me to be me, and for me to figure out what I like. I came to the realization that I have not posted about something that is kind of  who I am, and is also something that my family really connects together with. (Really all I really have to say when I am starting to argue with my one of my sisters is "Daniel Jackson", and then we will no longer be fitting. Although that is not a good way to work out an argument.) Anyway...... so what is this thing. Sci-Fi. I realize this seems really weird, that I like period Drama and Sci-Fi the two just don't go together in my head. But I like both weird or not.

I would not call myself a Sic-Fi expert, but I am familiar with some. There are Sci-Fi shows and movies I do not care to see. Some are just way to scary, or just plain not interesting. Like this one movie my family started because it had a particular actor in it that we liked, and we read the description thought it might be interesting. Started it on Netflix instant watch. Turned out to be really boring, and then kind of scary at some parts, we started just skipping to the scenes that just had the one actor in it. So I know what happened for the most part, and how it ended, but really was not all that great. So some is good and some not so good, but that is normal with anything that you watch.

Now what am I familiar with:
  • Star Trek: The Next Generation
  • Star Trek Original (Seen about a 1/3 of the episodes)
  • Started Deep Space 9 (not very far along at all)
  • Star Wars 4, 5, and 6.
  • Some of Farscape
  • Stargate: SG-1
  • Stargate: Atlantis
  • Stargate: Universe (a little over half) Stargate (The first movie)
  • Stargate Continuum
  • Stargate Ark of Truth
  •  Eureka
  • and probably some others. Now what am I familiar with.

Just looking at the list I realize now that there is a lot of
Stargate on it. That noted, I am probably now an expert on Stargate. My family has been on a Stargate kick for a while. But as Universe is all that is left, it will soon be over and we will move on. It is not that my family doesn't watch anything else we do. This just seems to be the preference since is is what we all can agree to like. Stargate is actually probably one of my favorites, I think it is tied with Star Trek TNG. I remember playing Star Trek in my backyard with my sisters. I have practicly grown up with Sci-Fi. It was a big part of my childhood. What can I say, it is part of who I am.

I like Science Fiction. It is something I enjoy, I am not nearly as obsessed as some people, but I think it is a creative and interesting form of entertainment that can deal with different issues. My family all enjoys this genre. I know like all things in the TV and film industry it has many faults, but as I said so do many other things.

Oh and if you are wondering who on earth Daniel Jackson is. This is him. He is really Dr. Daniel Jackson, but we always call him Daniel. He is an amazing archaeologist. I will probably do a post on him latter.

Blessings

Mockingjay Dress!!!

"Wonderingly, I lift my long, flowing sleeves into the air, and that's when I see myself on the television screen. Clothed in black except for the white patches on my sleeves. Or should I say my wings.
Because Cinna has turned me into a Mockingjay."            -Catching Fire Chapter 17

I love the picture, not quite what I picture in the book, but still very pretty. :)

Charles Dickens Birthday Quiz

It is Charles Dickens week over at The Old-Fashioned Charm! I hope some of you will skip over and have a look at what she has going on! I planed on posting the answers to her questions sooner, but life just got crazy! Any way I hope you enjoy! :)

1. How were you first introduced to Charles Dickens?
Well I must admit that though I had heard of Charles Dickens, my first true encounter with something related to him would be A Muppet Christmas Carol. :) I totally love the blue, furry Charles Dickens, who hangs out with a rat! haha!! You cannot help but love Gonzo.

2. Which Charles Dickens novels and stories have you read? Which are your favorites?
I have read

  • Bleak House
  • Great Expectation
  • Oliver Twist

3. Which Charles Dickens novel(s) do you most want to read?
I really really want to read Little Dorritt. I have started it and and a 5th of the way into it. I would also like to read

  • David Copperfield
  • A Christmas Carol
  • A Tale of Two Cities

4. What is your favorite Charles Dickens quotes?

"Reflect upon your present blessings of which every man has many - not on your past misfortunes, of which all men have some."

"There might be some credit in being jolly"

5. Which Charles Dickens film adaptations are in your top three? (If you have never seen one which 3 would you most like to see?)
I have only seen one and that is Bleak House 2005 done by the BBC(!!!). So I will list three other I would Like to see

  • Little Dorritt (the most recent one)
  • I would like to find a good version of Oliver Twist. (Any recommendations?)
  • There are several versions of Great Expectations

6. Who are your top three Dickens heroines? and Why?

  • I think I very favorite is Esther Summerson. She is sweet, caring sensible, and humble. Everything that I should like to be.
  • Amy Dorritt is my second favorite. She is shy, and sweet, and does not like to press herself on others.
  • hmmmm a third one..... I can't think of a third one that I like.

7. Who are your top three favorite Dickens heroes? Why?

  • I love Arthur Clennam. He is kind, considerate, and friendly. He is also well traveled which I find very cool.
  • Oliver Twist is sweet, polite, and despite that life seems to go against him, still manages to make it through all the same, without turning into Fagin, or the Artful Dogger.
  • Pip is alright, he is not quite as good or kind as Clennam, or Oliver. He is a little bit more human. He has his imperfections.

8. Which Three Dickens villains do you most love to hate? I find I have trouble really seeing who the villians are in Charles Dickens.I know who the "good guys" are, but the bad guys are kind of muddled. The only clear ones for me were in Oliver Twist. I disliked Sykes a lot, I felt sorry for Fagin in the end. I believe Tulkinghorn in Bleak House was the bad guy, but I felt sorry for him too.

9. Which Dickens characters do you find the most funny?

  • The Guy in Oliver Twist who always says he is going to "eat his head." I cannot remember his name!
  • Mr. Boythorn from Bleak house always made me smile. :)
  • The Artful Dodger would make me laugh a few times too.

10. If you could authorize a new film adaptation of one of Charles Dickens novels, which would it be? It would be Bleak House. As much as I love and enjoy the 2005 version there were just a few things about it that bothered me. Such as Esther's relationship with Mr. Johndyce. It didn't really fit with how I saw it in the book. There were a few other things too, but I can't remember what they were.

11. If you could have lunch with Charles Dickens today, what question would you most want to ask him?  How in the wide world did you come up with such complicated stories? Really it is quite confusing sometimes Mr. Dickens!

12. Have you ever read a Dickens biography, or watched a biographical film about him? I am ashamed to say I have not. Though it has been in the back of my mind to do so, for a while now, I have just not gotten around to doing it.

Review: Miracle at Midnight

Title: Miracle at Midnight
Producer: Disney
Director: Ken Cameron
Writers: Chris Bryant, Monte Merrick
Actors: Sam Waterston, Mia Farrow, Justin Whalin
My rating: 5/5

The story takes place in Denmark during the NAZI occupation in World War II. It is bases on a true story, of how the Danes saved many of the Danish Jews. It is a very moving story.

This is such a good movie! I enjoy studying WWII. (I know it sounds weird and that it was a horrible time, but I find it interesting, I think the survival stories are what I like)

The movie made me cry. When some one died, I started crying. When the Jew said he had studies Christianity, and started saying I was hungry and you gave me food, I was a stranger and you took me in, couple that with the context of the story, I cried some more. It really moved me to see what he said in action.Over all this movie was very moving for me. I don't think I can express how much it effected me.

One of the things that annoyed me though was it seemed like no one could keep their accents strait. They kept trying to sound Danish, and then sound American, then something else, the American. I really think they should have just dropped trying to do accents altogether if they really could not keep it strait. The Germans seemed to be able to keep their strait though.

The acting seemed alright, I think the one actor that really impresses me in this movie was Sam Waterston. I think it is good to note that there is nothing really overly violent, or bad in it. I think the most disturbing is when a character has hanged himself, you don't see anything, only the shadow of his feet. But other than that I think this is a great movie to watch with your family. I think you can have some great discussions with your family.

The Hobbit Trailer!!!!!

AHHHHH!!! I am so excited!!!! I can't wait for it to come out! But we are all stuck waiting a whole year! :( Why? It looks like it will be amazing though. How could it not be, with all the wonderful sets, characters, and mood music? Also I seem to be behind in posting this, but that comes as no surprise. I usually find stuff out after all the excitement has past. Oh well. :)

I am so excited about Richard Armitage being in it! :) I was thrilled that he was singing in the movie. It made me so happy! *giggle*

PS. The singing reminds me of Church.

A little lack of inspiration

So I am just doing a random post with pictures form some period dramas I like. Just to talk about them. Also since I am out of posting ideas at the moment. Hopefully some will come to me soon.

I love Ester Summerson! She is so sweet, lovely, and feminine! She is one of my favorites right up there with Elinor Dashwood and Jane Bennett. I like all the hair arrangements in this series. They were all so lovely.

I love lady Deadlocks hair. She always has it so wonderfully arranged. She is very elegant, I like that. A little uppity maybe, but elegant. I love all her dresses too. They are elegant just like her.

Has anyone else noticed that this dress....
looks just like this dress. Or is it just me?
I love Marian's dress. This is my favorite dress from the whole movie. I like Elinor's too. Margret is so cute in this picture! Marian's hair is lovely. I wish I could get it to be that curly, but mine just wont. *sigh*

The Greek Festival is tomorrow!! I am very excited!!! I can't wait to go!! :) :)

Pride and Prejudice 2005 rant

So I said I would talk more latter on Pride and Prejudice 2005. This is my rant about it, latter I hope to do a review after I have gotten some of the things I didn't like out of my system. I wan't to give it a nice review not a rant about what I didn't like. So sorry this is so long in coming!!

I have noticed that I am more particular with Jane Austen adaptations that with others. I don't know why, but I just am.

The big thing about this movie was that it was just too short!! 2 hours is just not enough time to cover the whole story. I would rather they take all the time they need, than for them to not take enough time and really mess things up. There where things that didn't happen in the book that they added, and then they took out some of the best parts! Maybe they would not have needed to do this if they had not added stuff?

Since Wickam is here I will talk about him. He was just not right. He was slimy from the beginning. I all ways pictured Wickam as being very charming, nice, and sweet, and then you find out how horrible he is. This Wickam is suspicious from the beginning. I have no idea how Lizzie saw anything in him at all! Wickam just was not right.

Mr. Bingley was not to dumb. Mr. Bingly in the book though not a smartest person on earth, was a gentlemen, kind, and caring. I don't get the same feel. Honestly I really like Bingley, but in this version I have no idea how anyone can like him, he just is to well... dumb. Sorry to be harsh on him, but that is just how I feel about him.

And now for the thing that made me really really mad!
*screams in horror!*

Miss Bingly is wearing a sleeveless dress!!!!!!!!!!!! I am not a fashion expert but this seems to me like a really wrong thing. It looks like she is wearing her underwear to the ball! It was just not right. It just did not feel at all proper for the time. It just seems like she is wearing her underwear to me.

On a side note I like her hair. I wish I had hair like that! I liked Miss Bingly way to much in this version. She just seemed like a stuck up person who was full of themselves, but not nearly as evil as she should be. I didn't even really feel like she liked Darcy, and I felt like she and Lizzie could have almost have been friends is Miss Bingly was not so stuck up. Also Her dresses, minus the one above, were the only dresses that I liked.
Maybe it was just me, but it seemed like everyone was running around in their night cloths half the time. What was up with that? I would not want Mr. Darcy walking in on me in my nightgown. I also don't think that she would have gone walking out of the house, no matter what hour it was, in her night gown. That just does not seem right.

I am not sure what to make of Mathew Macfayden's Mr. Darcy. On the one hand I like Macfayden so I was some what predisposed to like his Mr. Darcy. But His Darcy just didn't seem right. I didn't feel like he was a proud stuck up man, just really shy and not sure of himself. Which I though Mr. Darcy was sure of himself in the book, just proud, and disagreable.

I liked when they where dancing the other couples disappeared. That was really interesting to show how they where focused on each other

Georgiana seemed way to young. She looked 12 and no where near 16. She did seem really sweet though as Georgiana should be.

Also Why did they where their hair down? It kind of annoyed me as it seemed not quite right for the time. I am not an expert on Regency fashion, so I could be wrong. But I have seen quite a few Regency films and this was the only one where any of the women wore their hair down. Not that they didn't have nice hair.

The dresses where not very regency in this movie. I know that the director wanted to show the difference of status between the Bennetts and the richer people. But still I was not very happy with it. I mean Kitty and Lydia strike me as the kind of people who would have the latest fashion no matter what. Mrs. Bennetts dresses where really not regency at all. They where from the time before which I thought was really odd. (what was the time before Regency?)

Also look at Lizzie's hair here. I would not mind her bangs so much it they where not in her face. Also her coat was very ugly and looks like it was a guys coat. Maybe she got it from her father? I don't know it was just really ugly.
Ahh Jane. . . Jane is my favorite character from Pride and Prejudice. I find I am like her is some ways. I really like this Jane. She looked like Jane, and acted like Jane. Jane from 1995 had the character down right, but didn't quite look like her. This Jane looks like Jane. She is sweet and caring. The trying always to think the best of others didn't quite come across as well though. Jane was just about really nice thing in this movie.

One character that really annoyed me because he was not right was Mr. Collins. I mean Mr. Collins is suppose to be an annoying character, but it annoyed me because he was not what he should have been. He was not Mr. Collins. I can't put my finger on what about him was not Mr. Collins, perhaps it was because he did not use the phrases that Mr. Collins used?

Lizzie was not Lizzie at all. She was much more like Kitty and Lydia. Why Mr. Darcy liked her when she was so much like her younger sisters I have no idea. Also I don't remember Lizzie being so critical of men. Why was she like that? It didn't make sense, and was not at all Lizzie like. Also she was very rude to her father when she snatched the letter out of his hand. It was really really rude, and extremely unLizzie like.

I wanted to like this version. I knew when I started it that it would not be as good at the 1995 version, but I was so disappointed with it. I will do a real review of it latter in which I will try to be a little more balanced. This was not a review. It was just be writing about what annoyed me, and what I didn't like. And there are a few good things in here too I think.

I wish I had a clever title

So I saw Pride and Prejudice 2005 a long time ago. I think I was 10 or 11, which is not actually all that long ago since I am 16 but it seems like a long time ago. Well I didn't remember it all that well, and didn't really care since I had not been all that thrilled with it. None of my friends really cared for it either so I didn't really care much about it. Then I changed churches and now more of my friends really like this movie so I decided it was time to watch it again. So I did yesterday. I was not at all impressed. I was in fact horrified. The only good part was Mathew Macfadyen, but I didn't even really like his Mr. Darcy. And Jane, I liked Jane. I will write a more detailed post latter but for now I am just saying I am not thrilled at all with this version.

Anyway like I said more latter ta ta for now!
~Elizabeth

PS. On a side note the music was nice and pretty, but not the Oh My Gosh music that some movies have had for me.

Jane Austen questions #3

Time for more Jane Austen Week questions. This is the last of them so I hope you enjoy! :)

6. Top three Jane Austen Adaptations, and why?

Pride & Prejudice 1995 it one of them. I feel that this one is the most faithful the the book, and Colin Firth did an amazing job with Mr. Darcy, he got his character down. I love all the costumes, and it all ways is good for a laugh too. It is my families favorite.

I have not seen any other adaptations, so I cannot compare here. I love all the actors in this one they all did a great job portraying the characters. I love the scenery, and the costumes, but they don't always look very Regency to me. I really really love Emma Thompsons portrayal of Elinor.

This one is a definite family favorite. We all laugh and enjoy the humor, and as far as I can remember it is very close to the book. I really did not like the 2008 one. Emma drove me crazy in that one, and I felt like they completely ruined her character. I didn't like Emma in that one at all, and I didn't like Mr. Knightly either. I think the only character I liked was Harriet Smith.

7. Top 3 Jane Austen characters that "take delight in vexing" you?

George Wickham: He is so slimy sweet, and then you find out what kind of a man he is!

Willoughby: I really must admit that I feel sorry for him, but I am also very very angry for him running around and breaking girls hearts! Really I am very mad at him about that!!

Henry Crawford: I am so mad at him for breaking girls hearts for amusement!!!!!! I wonder if he would feel the same if someone broke his heart?

8. Jane Austen sequels....Do you like them or not? I have never read any of them. My mom has read a couple of Pride and Prejudice ones and she like them. I think it would depend on if it was faithful to the characters.

9. Do you have a favorite spot to keep all your Jane Austen "stuff"? I don't really have Jane Austen "stuff", but if I did I would keep it on my head board(which is like a personal bookshelf. I love it!).

10. Which Jane Austen character Are you most like? I would have to say I think I am most like Elinor Dashwood. I really really adore her!! I try to be sensible and calm.

11. What was your introduction to Jane Austen? My first introduction was watching Pride and Prejudice 1995 with my mother. I was about 7 or 8 I think.

Narnia: Voyage of The Dawn Treader

Title: Narnia: Voyage of The Dawn Treader 2010
Producer: Twentieth Century Fox
Directer: Micheal Apted
Writers: (Screenplay) Christopher Markus, Stephen McFeely, Micheal Petroni, (Novel) C. S. Lewis
Actors: Ben Barnes, Skandar Keynes, Georgie Henley
My Rating: 5/5 stars

My synopsis: Lucy and Edmund return to Narnia with their annoying cousin Eustace. King Caspian is making a voyage to search for some missing lords, and find that they are in for a lot more.

I got to see this a couple of Sundays age in the 2$ movie theater. In 3D!!! Of course that made the price go up to 4$ but that was okay. I loved it! It was amazing! I have a lot of pictures for this review so hang in there with me!

I loved the actor who played Eustace! He portrayed the character exactly the way I saw him in the book! He was very funny too! You get annoyed with him like you do in the book(at least I did). Any way I like him!
They also stuck much closer to the book than Prince Caspian did( I actually like Prince Caspian a lot I will talk about that some other time though). There were little differences, I think the plot was changed, and what they were fighting against too. But I would say that they had a lot of the same events happen in the movie as in the book. (I will double check this latter by reading the book again when I have time)

I loved Caspian! Who doesn't? I really like how Ben Barns portrayed the character.

Reepicheep is so cute! I can totally see why Lucy wants to hug him so much. I do think they could have done more with him though. I liked how Reepicheep and Eustace had such a close friendship, that was one of my favorite things.

If you didn't like how dark Prince Caspian was you will love Voyage of The Dawn Treader! It is bright and happy. I love how it had all the sunshine and the water. Not so many people die either so that lifts the mood of the film even more. Besides people not dieing is always an A+ right?

Costumes were wonderful! I love them. I didn't care for Lucy's though, but that's because I am a girly girl who likes skirts and dresses. I did like Lucy's outfit in the beginning though! I thought it was really cute an would not mind wearing something like it myself! I don't have any pictures of it though. :( I love the guys costumes, very sea worthy!!! I really like the sleeves on the guys shirts.

The setting was great. It was very much like what I pictured in the book. I loved the sea it was so pretty and blue! The rooms and buildings were great. I love all the color that was in it. I loved the old looking books. Some of the settings I don't even know how to describe. I will say this they were spectacular!
I can't really think of very many things that bothered me. The setting was great, the costumes were great, the story was great! Every thing was great! There was one thing that bothered me, and that I really really didn't like.

Prince Caspian was suppose to marry the Star Guys daughter(yes I know he has a name, but I can't remember it right now,my sister tells me it was Ramandu) She was not actually a star. She was just his daughter. In the movie they cut out her dad completely, and made her the star!!!!! You are probably wondering why this bothered me so much, I mean it is just a star right? But how is the world is Caspian suppose to marry her if she is a star!?!? Really I think being a star is a full time job, I mean it your not up there than someone might get lost. I don't think you can just leave the sky like that! Being queen of Narnia is a full time job too. You have to help the king rule the land(at least that is what I think queens should do) and you have to have kids right? Also I think she would need to be a wife to Caspian, she needs to be there as his best friend. How can you do two full time jobs at once?!?!?!?!?! I really really really did not like her being a star. It is driving me crazy trying to figure out how she is going to be both a star, and queen of Narnia. It really is driving me crazy!

On the whole it was a wonderful, fantastic, amazing movie!!!! I mean besides the whole star thing, and that wasn't to big of a part in the movie so I can kind of ignore that part. I really loved the movie it is spectacular! I hope you see it and love it as much as I did!

Tell me what you thought of it!

Blessings
